- GETTING STARTED
- ===============
-
- In this section we will introduce you to EnVision Publisher,
- talk about the installation procedure and give you pointers
- on how to begin desktop publishing right away. The following
- are the topics that will be covered in this section:
-
- Introduction
- System Requirements
- Installation
- 60 Second Manual
- The Keyboard Mouse
-
- Introduction
- ------------
-
- Welcome to EnVision Publisher, a true WYSIWYG (What You See
- Is What You Get) full-feature desktop publishing program,
- which allows you to design letterheads, resumes, flyers,
- newsletters, invoices, greeting cards, brochures, books, and
- just about anything else meant to look good on paper!
-
- Given EnVision Publisher's ease of use and its context-
- sensitive help, you will be able to envision and design your
- own desktop publishing masterpieces in no time at all.
-
- EnVision Publisher is among the most powerful, and yet
- easiest to use desktop publishing (DTP) programs available
- either as shareware or commercially. However, because
- EnVision Publisher is marketed as shareware, we do not have a
- large advertising overhead. This way we can sell EnVision
- Publisher for a fraction of what it would cost if you bought
- one of the commercial DTP programs; and still, with EnVision
- Publisher you get a far more superior product. Below are some
- highlights of EnVision Publisher:
-
- EnVision Publisher's Graphical User Interface (GUI),
- resembles a familiar GUI look, with pull-down menus, icons,
- and buttons. EnVision Publisher provides detailed context-
- sensitive and indexed help. To get help, all you have to do is
- press F1, or click on the help icon.
-
- EnVision Publisher has a state of the art scalable font
- technology capable of displaying and printing fonts in any
- size - from a tiny 4 points (0.055 inch) to a huge 144 points
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- 7
-
-
-
-
-

- --------------------------------------------------------------
- (2 inches). Fonts can be rotated at 90, 180, and 270 degrees,
- and filled with any of EnVision Publisher's fill
- patterns. Because the fonts are scalable, each font family is
- encapsulated in a small file (between 20k and 60k), making
- the use of soft fonts totally obsolete. One such file
- contains all font sizes for that font family in all font
- styles (normal, bold, italic, bold-italic). EnVision
- Publisher's fonts use an advanced hinting technology, which
- provides PostScript-like print quality on any printer (laser,
- dot-matrix, inkjet, PostScript).
-
- EnVision Publisher provides WYSIWYG editing at four
- magnification levels (View all, 100%, 200%, 400%), all of
- which are fully editable. The fonts and graphics that you see
- on the screen look exactly like what you will get printed!
-
- EnVision Publisher also provides extensive object drawing and
- importing capabilities. You can draw lines, rectangles,
- circles, ellipses, polygons, polylines, and Bezier Curves.
- The objects can use any of EnVision Publisher's fill and line
- styles in 16 colors or gray-scale levels. You can also import
- monochrome or color PCX images with ability to scale of modify
- the image brightness right on the screen.
-
- EnVision Publisher also offers complete text, column and text
- block manipulation capabilities. Text blocks can be created
- anywhere on the screen. You have full control over the text
- that goes on the page right down to character level. Each
- character can have any font, style, color, fill, kerning, and
- rotation. Also, text lines and paragraphs can be centered,
- left, right, or full justified, and you can choose the line
- leading of your choice.
-
- EnVision Publisher will work on all displays, including VGA,
- EGA, CGA, Hercules, etc. EnVision Publisher provides the
- highest quality printout on any printer (laser, dot-matrix,
- ink-jet, or PostScript).
-
- We are so sure you will like EnVision Publisher, we decided
- to market it as shareware. Shareware is a try-before-you-buy
- software promotion method. You get a shareware version of the
- program that you can try on your own. If you like it, you pay
- for it by registering in order to receive EnVision Publisher
- Plus or EnVision Publisher Pro. If you don't like it, you
- won't have to pay us anything. When you register, you receive
- the current version of EnVision Publisher Plus or EnVision
- Publisher Pro, a complete printed 350 page indexed and
- --------------------------------------------------------------

- illustrated User's Guide, many new scalable fonts (80 with
- the "Plus", and 140 with the "Pro"), access to our technical
- support staff, our quarterly newsletter, clipart and
- templates, and a license to legally use EnVision Publisher
- after the evaluation period.
-
- If you purchased this shareware version from a shareware disk
- vendor or from a shareware rack, the low price you paid for
- the disks only covered the vendor's distribution costs. It
- did not cover the software itself. We do not receive any
- income until you register.
-
- We have invested over 5 man-year of work in developing
- EnVision Publisher, its documentation, and the fonts. We
- believe in the shareware system of marketing software, and
- would like to continue to improve and upgrade the program.
- However, in order for us to do so, we must stay in business,
- and the only way for us to stay in business is if enough
- EnVision Publisher users register. Thousands of users like
- you have registered version 1 of EnVision, which enabled
- our company to grow and develop version 2 of the program.
- Only with your support will we be able to continue to improve
- the product. We urge you to register your EnVision Publisher,
- if you plan on using it.
-
- To find out more about what you get when you register, choose
- "Registration benefits" from the "Help" menu. To register,
- choose "Registration form" from the "Help" menu. Fill out the
- form on the screen, then click on the "Print" button to
- print it.
-
- Alternately, you can also fill out the registration form on the
- next page, and mail it to us together with your payment. If you
- pay for the registration with a Visa, MasterCard, or American
- Express, you can also register by calling our order desk toll
- free at 1-800-388-8474. This is an order desk only; we cannot
- answer technical support questions at this number. You can also
- fax your registration form to us at 813-541-5616. If you are
- a CompuServe user, you can E-mail your registration to us at
- address: 70304,64, or you can use CompuServe's "GO SWREG".
-
- We have international representatives in Europe, Australia,
- New Zealand and Canada. If you live outside U.S.A., please
- see "International sales" in the Help menu for a listing.
-
- We hope you'll enjoy creating your own publications with
- EnVision Publisher. Happy Desktop Publishing!

- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- -------------------
-
- - MS-DOS compatible computer (IBM-PC, AT, PS/2, or a
- compatible),
-
- - At least 450k free RAM memory,
-
- - A hard disk with 2 M-byte available,
-
- - A printer,
-
- - A graphic display (VGA, EGA, CGA, Hercules, MCGA,
- SuperVGA, etc.),
-
- - It is recommended that you have a mouse, but if you do
- not, EnVision Publisher will emulate one. See the
- section entitled "The Keyboard Emulated Mouse" for
- more details.
-
- - If you have a mouse connected to your computer, make
- sure that the mouse driver is loaded.
-
- If your computer has memory beyond 640k, we recommend that
- you comfigure some of it as EMS. This will improve EnVision
- Publisher's performance. In particular, it will significantly
- improve the print speed. All 386, 486, and some 286
- computers, have memory beyond 640k, but it is usually set up
- as XMS. To configure it as EMS you will need to include
- EMM386.EXE or a third party memory manager (QEMM, 386MAX,
- etc.) in your CONFIG.SYS file. EMM386.EXE comes with DOS 5
- and higher.
-
- For more details on how to accomplish this, please see "Print
- speedup" in EnVision Publisher's Help Topics in the Help
- menu. However, this is not necessary -- it is only
- recommended. (This will probably improve the performance of
- other programs besides EnVision Publisher, as well).

- INSTALLATION
- ------------
-
- This section will explain how to install the shareware
- version of EnVision Publisher on your hard disk. Because
- there are two major ways that you can obtain the shareware
- version of EnVision Publisher (from a shareware disk vendor,
- or by downloading the program from a BBS) we provided
- separate instructions to cover each one of these two cases.
-
- If you purchased the disks from a disk vendor:
- ----------------------------------------------
-
- Step 1: Insert the EnVision Publisher DISK 1 in drive A or B,
- whichever is more convenient for you.
-
- Step 2: If you inserted the EnVision Publisher DISK 1 in
- drive A then type A: and press Enter. If you inserted
- the disk in drive B then type B: and press Enter.
- (Notice the colon (:) after the drive letter). You
- are now logged to the drive where you inserted the
- EnVision Publisher DISK 1, and should see the A>
- prompt (or B>, if you inserted the disk in drive B).
-
- Step 3: Type INSTALL and press Enter. This will start the
- EnVision Publisher Installation program. Follow the
- instructions that appear on the screen. You can
- always exit the Install program by pressing the ESC
- key. Also, before the actual installation will begin,
- you will be offered the opportunity to go back and
- change your entries.
-
- Step 4: Once EnVision Publisher is installed on your hard
- disk, you can start EnVision Publisher by changing to
- the subdirectory where you installed the program and
- then entering EVP. (You should always start EnVision
- Publisher from the EVP directory.)
- (If you are running the program on a Hercules
- monochrome display, you should start the program with
- the command: EVP HERC)
-
- If you downloaded EnVision Publisher from a BBS:
- ------------------------------------------------
-
- Step 1: Make a directory called EVP on your hard disk.
- You do this by entering MD \EVP at the DOS prompt.
-

- --------------------------------------------------------------
- Step 2: Copy all the files that you downloaded from the BBS
- onto the EVP directory.
-
- Step 3: Unarchive the EnVision Publisher files. This is done
- with compression programs such as PKZIP, or LHARC,
- depending on what your BBS uses.
-
- Step 4: To run EnVision Publisher, first change to the
- directory where you installed it, then enter EVP to
- start the program.
- (If you are running the program on a Hercules
- monochrome display, you should start the program with
- the command: EVP HERC)
-
- You do not have to run the INSTALL program if you obtained
- EnVision Publisher from a BBS.
-
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- Note: EnVision Publisher will automatically recognize your
- ----- mouse, if your mouse driver is properly loaded. If you
- have an older version mouse driver, or if you have an
- older VGA graphics card produced before the VGA
- standard was finalized, under very rare circumstances,
- EnVision Publisher may not be able to recognize your
- mouse, or it may not display properly. Please refer to
- the section "Troubleshooting: Answers to Common
- Questions" in this manual for details on how to
- correct this. If you are using DOS 6 and you are having
- problems with your current mouse driver, you can replace
- your mouse driver with the MOUSE.COM mouse driver that
- is included with DOS 6. To accomplish this, first delete
- any MOUSE.SYS or MOUSE.COM commands from your CONFIG.SYS
- and AUTOEXEC.BAT files on your root directory, then
- include the MOUSE command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to
- load the Microsoft (tm) mouse driver that comes with
- DOS version 6.

- THE KEYBOARD EMULATED MOUSE
- ---------------------------
-
- If you have a mouse, you can skip this section.
- If you don't have a mouse, you can still use EnVision
- Publisher to create a publication. You can follow all the
- directions in this manual that call for the use of the mouse
- when you press the "Keyboard Mouse" keys. The following are
- the keys that you need to press for mouse emulation:
-
- SHIFT-TAB - Press this key combination to toggle the
- keyboard mouse ON or OFF. Because the mouse emulation uses
- the keyboard, when you toggle the keyboard mouse on, only the
- mouse keys are active. When the keyboard mouse is ON, a small
- icon of a mouse appears at the right end of the status line.
-
- ARROW KEYS - You can press any of the arrow keys on your
- keyboard to move around the EnVision Publisher screen, when
- the mouse is toggled to ON.
-
- F7 - Pressing on this function key will make your mouse
- cursor move in either 1 pixel increment, or 20 pixel
- increments. Everytime you press F7 it will toggle between
- either 1 or 20 pixels. The mouse has to be toggled ON for
- this key to work.
-
- F8 - When you press on this function key, it is the same as
- double-clicking with the mouse. To double-click means to
- click twice rapidly in one location. The mouse has to be
- toggled ON for this key to work.
-
- F9 - Pressing this function keys toggles the Click-Lock ON or
- OFF. The Click-Lock works the same way, as if you pressed
- down the left mouse button, and moved the mouse at the same
- time (dragged). The mouse has to be toggled ON for this key
- to work. When the click-Lock is ON, the mouse icon on the
- status line will have its button darkened.
-
- F10 - This function key works the same way as if you clicked
- once with the mouse. The mouse has to be toggled ON for this
- key to work.
-
-
- We recommend that you use the keyboard-mouse when working
- in the page area, and the keyboard when using the menu and

- ENVISION PUBLISHER MENU SYSTEM
- ==============================
-
- In this section we will discuss the elements that make up the
- EnVision Publisher Menu System, and the various ways of using
- it.
-
- IMPORTANT: If you do NOT have a mouse read the section
- entitled "The Keyboard Emulated Mouse", on page 17 of this
- reference guide, and in the Getting Started of the EnVision
- Publisher User's Guide. The keyboard commands listed in this
- chapter are meant for user's that already have a mouse, and
- are listed to supplement the mouse NOT to replace it.
-
- The following is an outline of this chapter:
-
- Using the Menu Panel
- Menu Commands and Icons
- Using the Dialog Boxes
- Close Button
- Drag Area
- Pick List
- Checkboxes
- Radio Buttons
- Sample Box
- Text Entry Box
- OK Button
- Information Box
- Cancel Button
- Help Button
-
- USING THE MENU PANEL
- --------------------
-
- There are two ways to use the Menu Panel, one is through the
- use of the mouse and the other is through the keyboard.
-
- With the Mouse
- --------------
-
- There are two ways to select an item from the Menu Panel with
- the mouse:
- (1) Click once on one of the six Menu Panel choices. When the
- menu pulls down, click again on one of the commands listed.
- OR
- (2) The other way to select commands with the mouse is by

- dragging. To do this, first position the mouse cursor over
- any of the menu panel choices. Now press the left mouse
- button, and while pressing down on the mouse button over the
- menu choice, slide the mouse cursor down. When you are over
- the desired command, release the mouse button over it.
-
- With the Keyboard
- -----------------
-
- NOTE: If you do not have a mouse read page 6 of this
- reference guide.
-
- To choose a menu item from the Menu Panel with the keyboard,
- press the ALT key on the keyboard and the underlined letter
- of your menu choice. When the menu pulls down, choose one of
- the listed commands by pressing the underlined letter in the
- command.
-
- USING THE DIALOG BOXES
- ----------------------
-
- When a menu command has three dots following it (e.g. the
- command Go to... in the Page menu), that command will open a
- dialog box. When there aren't any dots following a command,
- that command will be carried out immediately once it is
- selected from the menu.
-
- A dialog box is a window that pops-up so you can provide
- and/or select information.
-
- Close Button
- ------------
-
- The Close Button is located in the upper left corner of a
- dialog box and its function is to exit a dialog box, leaving
- the options unchanged. Some Verify dialog boxes will not have
- a Close Button because they require verification from the
- user, such as when deleting objects from the publication.
-
- With the Mouse: Simply click on the Close Button with the
- mouse.
-
- A quick way to exit a dialog box is to press the right mouse
- button once, this will immediately activate the Close button.
- Note: The right mouse button always acts as the ESC key.

- has its scroll bar shaded is the one that is active.
-
- With the Mouse:
- Click on one of the arrow buttons to scroll individually
- through each of the available items listed. When the item
- that you want is displayed, click on it and it will
- become highlighted. To activate the item selected, click

- OR
- You may also drag the elevator button (either up or

- contained in the pick list. When you see the item
- displayed in the pick list - click on it, and then click
- on the OK button.
- OR
- Click anywhere in the shaded portion of the Scroll Bar,
- this will cause the items in the pick list to page either
- up or down. This is similar to pressing the PageUp or
- PageDown key on the keyboard to scroll through the pick
- list.

- -------------
-
- The Cancel button is similar in function to the Close button.
- Click on this button when you don't want any changes that
- were made in a dialog box to take effect, or if you just want
- to exit the dialog box. You may also press the ESC key, or
- click once on the right mouse button.
-
- Push Buttons
- ------------
-
- Besides the OK and Cancel buttons, EnVision Publisher's
- dialog boxes sometimes have other buttons, such as the Change
- Dir and Change Drive push buttons in the Import Style Sheets
- dialog box (look on page 3 - 5 of this chapter.) To activate
- the push buttons, you click on them or press the underlined
- letter. If the button has a thick frame around it, then it is
- a "default" button that can be selected by pressing the Enter
- key. Usually, the OK button is the default button.
-
- Help Button
- -----------
-
- The Help Button is located in the top right corner of all
- dialog boxes. Clicking on the Help Button provides context-
- sensitive help. This means that EnVision Publisher will give

- IMPORTING TEXT
- --------------
- You may either import text into an existing text block or
- create a new text block first, and then import text later.
-
- Here is a step by step procedure on how to import text into a
- newly created text block.
-
- Step 1 Select the Text Tool from the Tool Panel.
-
- Step 2 position the I-Beam on the publication page where you
- would like to draw the text block.
-
- Step 3 Click on the left mouse button and drag the I-Beam
- in the right and down directions, forming a rectangle. This
- is your text block. When you release the left mouse button, a
- blinking text cursor will appear.
-
- Step 4 You should now open the Type specs dialog box and
- choose your type specifications.
-
- Step 5 Select the File menu, and choose the Import command.
-
- Step 6 When the Import dialog box opens, select the
- appropriate file to import. You may have to click on the
- Change Drive button (after clicking on the new drive), to
- change drives, or on the Change dir button, to change the
- directory (after clicking on a new directory).
-
- Step 7 Click on the Import button when ready to import your
- file. The Import dialog box will close, and the imported text
- will fill your text block. If the imported file will not fit
- into the text block, EnVision Publisher will let you know by

- EXPORTING TEXT
- --------------
-
- Step 1 Select the Text Tool from the Tool Panel.
-
- Step 2 Highlight the text that you want to export. For
- detailed information on how to highlight text, read the
- section entitled: Highlighting Text in this chapter.
-
- Step 3 Next, click on the File menu, and choose the Export
- command.
-
- Step 4 When the Export dialog box opens, type in a name for
- your export file in the Filename text entry box, or select a
- file from the "Files" pick list.
-
- Your filename can be up to 8 characters, not including the
- extension. If you don't type in an extension, EnVision
- Publisher will automatically assign the ".TXT" extension to
- your export file. You can also select an existing file to
- export your text into. If the file that you want to export
- to, has an extension other than ".TXT" you will have to type
- in the full filename with its extension in the Filename text
- entry box.
-
- If you want to add the text you are exporting to the end of
- an existing text file, check the "Append text to end of file
- checkbox".
-
- Step 5 Click on the Export button after you specify a
- filename for the text to export to.
-
- Note: If "Append" check box is checked, the text will be
- appended to end of file, otherwise the file will be
- overwritten. See chapter 5 in the User's Guide for additional
- information on the Export command.

- CHOOSING TYPE SPECIFICATIONS
- ----------------------------
-
- When you want to change any type characters (font, size,
- style, etc.) you'll have to bring up the Type specs dialog
- box to do it. Let's look at the Type specs dialog box:
-
- The Type specs dialog has options that allow you to change
- the font, style, size, color, fill, rotation, case, position,
- and even the tabs of your text.
-
- For additional information about the Type specs dialog box,
- read the section entitled: "Type Specs" in Chapter 9 of the
- EnVision Publisher User's Guide.
-
- To change the text attributes of your type
- ------------------------------------------
- Step 1 Select the Text Tool from the Tool Panel.
-
- Step 2 Highlight the text whose type attributes you want to
- change.
-
- Step 3 Bring up the Type specs dialog box. You can bring up
- the Type specs dialog by clicking on the Quick-Access Type
- specs icon, or by selecting the Type specs command from the
- Text menu, or by pressing F8 or CTRL-Z.
-
- Step 4 Choose your text attributes as needed:
-
- Step 5 Click OK in the Type specs dialog box when you are
- done making your selections.
-
- To Change the Type Attributes While Typing Text
- -----------------------------------------------

- the characters that will be entered next.
-
- Note: The font name, style (bold, italic), color and
- rotation is shown on the Status Line.
-
-
- JUSTIFICATION
- -------------
-
- Line justification applies to an entire paragraph, and refers
- to the way text is aligned on a page. A paragraph is a range
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- 45
-
-
-
-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- of one or more text lines ended by a carriage return (which
- is invisible).
-
- You may use the justification commands found in the Text
- Menu, or use the shortcuts below:
-
- Justification Shortcuts
- -----------------------
- To Right Justify CTRL-R
- To Left Justify CTRL-L
- To Center Justify CTRL-C
- To Full Justify CTRL-F
-
- Justifying a Paragraph
- ----------------------
- To change the justification of one paragraph, put the
- blinking cursor inside the paragraph, and either select the
- desired justification from the menu, or press CTRL and the
- letters R, L, C, or F.
-
- Justifying More Than One Paragraph
- ----------------------------------
- To justify more than one paragraph, first highlight the
- paragraphs, then select the justification desired.
-
- Justifying a Line
- -----------------
- If you only want to justify one line of text, you must insert
- a carriage return at the end of that line. To insert a
- carriage return, position the I-Beam at the end of that line
- and click, then press the ENTER key.
-
- The next step is to click on the line that you want to
- justify, and then select the justification desired.
-
-
- LEADING
- -------
-
- Leading is the vertical spacing between each line of text,
- and is expressed as a percentage of character height. If you
- don't change the leading value yourself, EnVision Publisher
- will automatically calculate the leading value to be 120% of
- the largest character.
-
- Leading is calculated on the largest character in a line,
- even when you have more than one font size on a line. You may
- --------------------------------------------------------------

-
-
-
-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- change the leading of one line, or a group of consecutive
- lines.
- Note: The leading of the first line in a text block can't be
- changed.
-
- To change the leading of one line of text
- -----------------------------------------
- Step 1 While in the Text tool, click anywhere within the
- line that you want to change the leading in (except the first
- line).
- OR
- Highlight the line of text by positioning the I-Beam in front
- of the particular line, clicking on the line, and while the
- mouse button is pressed down, slowly dragging till the end of
- the line.
- OR
- CTRL-Double-Click anywhere on the line.
-
- Step 2 Click on the Leading command in the Text menu.
-
- Step 3 Click in the Leading text box, and backspace over the
- existing leading value.
-
- Step 4 Type in your new value, and press Enter twice, or
- click on the OK button to accept your changes.
-
- To change the leading of an entire paragraph
- --------------------------------------------
- Step 1 Highlight all the text in the particular paragraph,
- or double-click anywhere within the paragraph (this will
- automatically highlight the entire paragraph).
-
- Step 2 Next, choose the Leading command and specify your
- leading.
-
- To change the leading of an entire text block
- ---------------------------------------------
- Step 1 Highlight the entire text block by dragging the I-
- Beam from the top, to the bottom of the text block.
- OR
- ALT-Double-Click anywhere in the text block.
- Step 2 Next, choose the Leading command and specify your
- leading.

- KERNING
- -------
-
- Kerning is expressed as a percentage of the character's
- width. To change a kerning value, highlight the desired text
- and bring up the Kerning dialog box, found in the Text menu.
- Kerning is always calculated to the right of a character.
-
- The allowable kerning values can range between 1% and 255%
- thus giving you great flexibility. 100% is the default value,
- and it does not affect the spacing. Kerning values below 100%
- will reduce the spacing between characters, thus causing
- characters to appear closer together. Kerning values greater
- than 100% will increase the spacing, thus causing the
- characters to appear further apart.
-
- The new kerning value that you enter will only affect the
- highlighted characters. Any characters entered right behind
- the kerned character will not be affected by the kerning
- value - you will have to highlight them and reinvoke the
- Kerning dialog box.
-
- Reducing the Space between Two Characters
- -----------------------------------------
- Kerning is always calculated to the right of a character. If
- you want to reduce the space between two characters, you need
- to only highlight the character on the left, bring up the
- Kerning dialog box, and enter a value smaller than 100.
-
- Increasing the space between two characters
- -------------------------------------------
- Follow the directions outlined above, except enter a kerning
- value larger than 100.
-
- Changing the space between more than one character
- --------------------------------------------------
- Highlight the characters whose spacing you would like to
- change. Then bring up the Kerning dialog box, and type in the
- desired kerning value. A value greater than 100 increases the
- spacing between characters, and a value of less than 100,
- reduces the spacing between characters.
-
- For additional information on the Kerning dialog box, read
- the Kerning section in Chapter 9 of the EnVision Publisher
- User's Guide. The User's Guide is part of the registered
- EnVision Publisher package.

-
- In the "Inside" text box you enter the width of the inner
- margin. The inner margin is the right margin for left-sided
- pages, or the left margin for right-sided pages.
-
- In the "Outside" text box you enter the width of the outside

- pages, or the right margin for right-sided pages.
-
- In the "Top" text box you enter the width of the top margin.
-
- In the "Bottom" text box you enter the width of the bottom
- margin.
-
- Note: The margin specifications must be entered in the
- appropriate measurement unit (inches, centimeters, or picas)
- as specified in the "Measurements" dialog box (which is part
- of the "Options" menu).
-
- Orientation
- -----------
- Click on the "Portrait" button to define the pages as
- vertical (tall). Click on the "Landscape" button to define the
- pages as horizontal (wide).
-
- Note: Regardless of the page orientation selected, while the
- publication is created on the screen, the objects will be
- shown in a vertical position. However, they will print
- appropriately.
-
- Text block columns
- ------------------
- The "Auto column" radio button determines whether or not
- default text block(s) are created automatically on new pages:
-
- First - text block column(s) will only be created
- automatically for page 1 in the publication.
-
- All - text block column(s) will be created automatically for
- all pages.
-
- None - text block column(s) will never be created
- automatically.

- --------------------------------------------------------------
- In the "Columns" text box you enter the number of text block
- columns to be created automatically when new pages are added
- to the publication.
-
- In the "Gutter" text box you enter the distance between text
- block columns. This must be entered in the appropriate
- measurement unit (inches, centimeters, or picas) as specified
- in the "Measurements" dialog box.
-
- Note: Text block columns will not be created on a page unless
- that page is completely empty (no objects exist on it, and
- this includes empty text blocks). Therefore, you should invoke
- Setup Page before you start creating your publication, or
- simply insert a new page and then choose the Setup page
- command. Click OK to accept your changes. Note that the "New"
- command deletes the current publication from memory, if you
- change your mind, click on the "Cancel" button.
-
- OPEN
- ----
-
- This command brings up the Open dialog box and allows you to
- load a publication file previously saved with the program.
- There are two types of files that can be opened from this
- dialog box: a Publication or a Template.
-
- How to change the drive
- -----------------------
- To change the drive, select the desired drive from the Drives
- pick list, then click on the Change Drive push button. You can
- also change the drive by double clicking on the drive desired.
-
- Note: Due to a problem in MS-DOS, on some computers or
- networks, the dialog box may not identify your drives properly
- (some drives may not show in the "Drives" pick list, or more
- drives may show). If this happens, you should start EnVision
- Publisher with the LD=D command line parameter, where the "D"
- after the equal sign represents the last drive that you want
- the program to show in the "Drives" pick list. For example, to
- force the program to list drives A through G, you would start
- EnVision Publisher like this: EVP LD=G
-
- Changing the directory
- ----------------------
- To change the directory, select the desired directory from the
- Directories pick list, then click the Change Dir push button.
- You can also change the directory by double clicking on the

- directory desired. To go back one level on the directory tree,
- select the double-dot (.. <prev>) entry from the Directories
- pick, then click Change Dir.
-
- Opening a Publication
- ---------------------
- You can select the file to open from the "Files" pick list, or
- simply click in the "Filename" text box, backspace to the
- beginning, and type in a filename. Entering a file extension
- is optional - if you do not, ".EVP" will be assumed for
- Publication files, and ".EVT" will be assumed for Template
- files. If you choose to type in the filename, any selection in
- the Files pick list will be bypassed.
-
- The "Delete" button deletes the publication file currently
- highlighted in the "Files" pick list. Use this feature
- cautiously, as files that have been deleted cannot be restored.
- This accomplishes the same thing as the DOS "DEL" command.
-
- SAVE
- ----
-
- The Save command lets you save your publication to a disk
- file. The first time you choose the Save command for a new
- publication (i.e. whose name is "UNTITLED"), the Save command
- will invoke the Save as... dialog box so that you can provide
- a filename. Note: When saving, EnVision Publisher makes
- automatic back-up files with the extension ".BAK".
-
- Another Way to Save
- -------------------
- The Instant Save Button is a shortcut to save your publication
- file. It is located to the right of the Tool Panel, and it
- also shows the name of your publication. You must be in Ready
- mode in order to save with the Instant Save Button.
-
- Important: For your protection we recommend that you save the
- publication that you are working on - about every 20 minutes.
-
-
- SAVE AS
- -------
-
- The Save as... command is part of the Files menu, and it lets
- you save the current publication file to disk, for later use.
- The Save as... command pops-up a dialog box from which you
- can select the drive, directory, and filename.

- "Publication" or "Template" radio button, backspace to the
- beginning of the line, then click in the Filename text entry
- box and type in the new filename. You do not have to type in
- the extension (or a period), since the program automatically
- assigns an extension of ".EVP" for a publication, or an
- extension of ".EVT" for a template. Important: Your filename
- should only contain 8 characters. If you choose to type in a
- new filename, any selection in the "Files" pick list will be
- bypassed. You can also enter a search filemask containing the
- DOS global characters: * and ?. The filemask will be used by
- the "Files" pick list.
-
- You can also select an existing filename in the "Files" pick
- list to save your work to, but doing this will overwrite the
- existing file.
-
- Click Save to save the specified file, or Cancel to close the
- dialog box without saving the publication.
-
- How to change the drive
- -----------------------
- To change the drive, click on the desired drive from the
- Drives pick list, then click on the Change Drive push button.
-
- Note: Due to a problem in MS-DOS, on some computers or

- 100 will cause the printout to be reduced to that percentage
- of the real size. For example, 50 will cause the printout to
- be reduced to 50% of its original size.
-
- The "Options" check-boxes determine how the pages will print:
-
- Collate - when checked, and printing more than one copy the
- program will collate the pages.
- Reverse - when checked, pages will print in reverse order.
- Odd - when checked, only odd numbered pages will print.
- Even - when checked, only even numbered pages will print.
- Note: Do not check both Odd and Even at the same time. If you
- wish to print all pages (odd and even), leave these boxes
- unchecked.
-
- "Printer emulation or image export" pick list lets you
- choose the type of printer and resolution you will be using.
-
- Listed after the last printer emulation in the "Printer
- emulation or image export" pick list, there are the bit-
- mapped image print drivers. These drivers will let you print
- an entire document to PCX, TIFF, or IMG files which can later
- be imported into EnVision Publisher or any other program that
- accepts them, as well as be used with a fax/modem. When
- choosing one of the bit-mapped image print drivers, "Print to:
- Image" must also be selected in the "Printer setup" dialog.
-
- Note: the unregistered shareware version of EnVision Publisher
- does not contain the bitmap image print drivers. These drivers
- are only available with EnVision Publisher Plus and EnVision
- Publisher Pro, once you register.

- Note: If you select to print to a file, then you may also
- assign a filename to your file. To assign a filename
- click on the Printer Setup button, click in the
- "Filename" entry box, backspace over the existing name,
- and then type in a new name. An extension of ".PRT" is
- automatically assigned to all non-PostScript printer
- files, and ".EPS" to all PostScript printer files.
- Port - You may also select to which port you want to print:
- "LPT1", "LPT2", "COM1", "COM2". To select one of the ports,
- click on the respective button. "LPT1" and "LPT2" are parallel
- ports, whereas "COM1" and "COM2" are serial ports.
- Timeout - The default timeout is 360 seconds.
- Filename - This is where you type in a filename, when printing
- to a disk file. The filename can be eight characters long. An
- extension of ".PRT" is automatically assigned to non-
- PostScript printers, or "EPS" for PostScript printers. When
- using one of the bitmap image print drivers, these extensions
- will be used: PCX, TIF, IMG.
- Baud - This option specifies the transmission rate in bits per
- second. You may type in one of the following baud rates: 300,
- 600, 1200, 2400, 4800, or 9600. The default setting is 9600.
- Check your printer's manual if you are not sure of which baud
- rate to choose (when using the serial port for printing).
- Parity - This option is used to set the parity bit to check
- for transmission errors. You may select one of three parity
- settings: "Even", "None", "Odd". The default is "None".
- Databits - This option specifies the number of data bits in a
- character. You may choose between 7 or 8 databits.
- Stopbits - This option specifies the number of stop bits that
- define the end of a character. Your available choices are only
- 1 or 2 stopbits.
- Laser legal paper - should be checked when you are using
- legal-size paper on a LaserJet (or compatible) printer that
- does not have the legal tray. In other words, the paper will
- be fed in manually. Normally, this is unchecked.
- Laser auto reset - determines whether the Esc-E code (reset
- printer) is sent automatically when printing on a LaserJet
- (or compatible) printer. Normaly this is checked.

- PostScript fonts - When this checkbox is checked it means that
- when printing, instead of the fonts available with EnVision
- Publisher, the printer will use Postscript fonts resident in
- your printer. We recommend leaving this option checked.
- Fine fill pattern - selects how fine the object fill patterns
- will print. Checking this will produce true gray-scale on
- LaserJet or dot matrix printers. Does not affect PostScript.
- Left padding - specifies the number of pixels (in 1/1000 of
- an inch) to move the page image to the right. Negative
- values will move the page to the left.
- Top padding - specifies the number of pixels (in 1/1000 of an
- inch) to move the page image towards the bottom. Negative
- values will move the page image towards the top.
- NOTE: Baud, Parity, Databits, and Stopbits apply only to
- serial printers (COM1 or COM2).

-
- "Find Printer" Dialog Box
- -------------------------
- The Find Printer dialog consists of the Printers pick, and the
- Emulates option.
-
- Printers - This is a list of about 1300 popular printers.
- Scroll through this list to find your printer. Once you locate
- you printer model, click on it. The Emulates option will
- display the selected printer's known emulations. If your
- printer model has added options (such as a Postscript
- cartridge), you will have to choose its emulation directly
- from the "Printer emulation or image export" pick list,
- located in the Print dialog box.
-
- Emulates - This option displays the available printer
- emulations of the printer model selected in the Find Printer
- pick list. Some printers will emulate only one printer, while
- others may emulate as many as four. To choose an emulation,
- just click on the button to the left of the listed printer
- emulation. Click on the OK button when you are done with your
- selections.
-
- If your printer model has extra options (such as a Postscript
- cartridge, or a color kit), you will have to choose its
- emulation directly from the Printer emulation and DPI pick
- list, located in the Print dialog box.
-
- When you are back in the Print dialog box, and you have
- finished making your printer selections, click on the OK
- button to start printing.

-
- COPY Command
- ------------
-
- This command allows you to copy an object (graphic or text)
- in your current publication, and then paste it down in
- another location or another publication.
-
- Note: Any object or group of objects that is copied with the
- "Copy" command is automatically placed into the EnVision
- Publisher internal clipboard and erases the object that was
- copied previously.
-
- Accessing the Copy Command

-
- Copying a Text Range
- ---------------------
- Before choosing the Copy command, you must be in Text edit
- mode, and the text that you want to copy must be highlighted.
-
- Copying a Graphic or Whole Text Block
- -------------------------------------
- Prior to choosing the Copy command: the Pointer Tool must be
- activated and the object to be copied must be selected.
-
- Copying a Group of Objects
- -------------------------
- To select a group of objects, select the Pointer tool, then
- draw a box completely surrounding the objects that you wish to
- group. This will be a dashed box. Once you are done, release
- the mouse button. The program will shrink your box to contain
- only the objects that have been grouped. In the center of this
- box you will see a large control point. You can now choose
- "Copy" from the "Edit" menu.
-
- How to Move a Copied Object or a Group of Objects
- -------------------------------------------------
- To move any object you must select the Pointer tool, then
- click twice on the object to copy, (click once for ellipses,
- PCX images, and text blocks). Next click on the object's
- middle control point and drag to the new location. To move a
- group of objects, first select the objects as explained above,
- then move the group by dragging the large control point.
-
- PASTE Command
- -------------
-
- "Paste" lets you place a previously cut or copied graphic, text
- block, or group of objects. You may use the "Paste" command ONLY
- after using the "Cut" or "Copy" commands first. The "Paste"
- command will appear as gray instead of black in the Edit

-
- Pasting a Text Range
- --------------------
- Step 1. While in Text Edit mode click the mouse at the place
- in the text block where you wish to have the text range
- pasted - the blinking text cursor will now appear there.
- Step 2. Choose the "Paste" command. The text range stored in the
- clipboard will be pasted into the text block at the cursor.
-
- Pasting Graphics, a Text Block, or a Group Of Objects
- -----------------------------------------------------
- While in Ready mode, select the Paste command. The object or
- the group of objects currently stored in the clipboard will be
- pasted onto the page.
-
- Note: When "pasting" an object, the object will be placed on
- the page at the exact location from where it was "cut" or
- "copied". Thus if the original object is still there, the
- object in the clipboard will overlap it. You can move the
- newly pasted object by clicking on it with the Pointer tool,
- and dragging it by its center control point to a new location.
-
- CLEAR Command
- -------------
-
- Choosing this command deletes your text or graphic. Clear
- works the same way as the Delete key on your keyboard. Before
- using the clear command you must first select the object.
-
- TO TOP AND TO BOTTOM
- --------------------
-
- These two commands are useful when you have text blocks or
- graphics that are overlapping, and you would like to switch
- the order in which they overlap. Choosing the To bottom
- command will send the selected object to the bottom layer
- of your object stack. Likewise, if you choose the To top
- command, the selected object will move up to the front of
- your object stack.
-
- LINE SPECS Command
- ------------------
-
- The Line specs command is part of the Edit menu and it opens

- and color used when drawing an object. A quick way to access the
- Line specs... dialog box is by clicking on the Line specs icon
- located at the far left of the screen.
-
- The Color pick list showing the available line colors.
- To choose a line color, click on the up or down arrow keys
- until you see the desired color name shown in the pick list,
- and then move the mouse pointer directly over to the desired
- color and click once. Choosing a color will not have any
- affect on your printout unless you print on a printer that
- supports color or gray-scale. You may want to choose a color
- solely for screen output esthetics, even though you have a
- monochrome printer.
-
- The next item in the Line specs dialog box is the line style
- and thickness selection. It consists of two rows of 18 boxes,
- with 9 different line styles, in two different thicknesses.
-
- Editing an existing line or border
- ----------------------------------
- First, click on the object whose line style you want to change.
- Next select the "Line Specs" command, and make your selections.
- Then choose the "Force attributes" command from the Edit menu.
-
- If you don't want a border around an object
- -------------------------------------------
- If you don't want a border around your object, choose the
- line color of the object's background. For example, if your
- page is white, and you don't want your rectangle to have a
- border, choose white as the color of your border. Another way
- to do this is to choose a solid line, and choose its color to
- be the same as the fill color.
-
-
- FILL SPECS Command
- ==================
-
- Choosing the "Fill specs... " command from the Edit menu
- opens the Fill specs dialog box where you can select fill
- colors and patterns. The "Fill specs" dialog can also be
- accessed by clicking on the "Fill specs" Quick-Access icon,
- located to the left of the screen. The "Fill specs" command
- displays a dialog box where you can select several options:
- The "Color" option is a pick list that selects the color of
- the fill. If you do not print on a printer that supports color
- or gray-scale, this option will not affect the final printout.
- In the Style selection there are two rows of 18 boxes with

- different fill styles. To select a fill style, simply click
- on the fill box of your choice, or use the LeftArrow and
- RightArrow keys to browse. The currently selected fill style
- will show in the Sample-Box below the Cancel button.
-
- When you're done with your selections click OK to activate
- the selected fill options. If you change your mind and wish
- to exit the Fill specs dialog box with no changes, click on
- the Cancel button.
-
- Objects with no fill
- --------------------
- If you want to have a drawing object with no fill, choose
- "Black" from the color pick list, and "Empty" from the fill
- pattern selection.
-
- How to set your drawing object to a "paper white" fill
- -----------------------------------------------------
- To set your drawing object to "paper white", choose "White"
- from the color pick list in the "Fill specs" dialog.
- Hint: "Paper white" filled objects can be used to cover
- other objects, or just part of other objects that you do not
- want to be printed.
-
- Note: The Fill specs settings are also used for filled text.
-
-
- FORCE ATTRIBUTES
- ----------------
-
- This command is accessed from the Edit menu, and is used in
- conjunction with the Line Specs... and Fill Specs...
- commands. Use this command when you want to alter the line
- and/or fill specs of an existing object.
-
- Changing the fill color and pattern of an existing object
- Step 1 Click on the object with the Pointer tool.
- Step 2 Select the desired line specs and/or fill specs.
- Step 3 Select Force attributes from the Edit menu. The
- object will reflect your new line and/or fill specs
- immediately.
-
- SPELL CHECKER
- -------------
-
- The "Spell checker..." command is part of the "Edit" menu,
- and it Lets you check the spelling of the words in a text block.
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- 66
-
-
-
-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- To invoke the spell checker you must be in Text-edit mode
- (click in the text block to go into this mode). If the spell
- checker finds a word that it does not understand, it will
- display it in the "Problem word" text box, and wait for you to
- make a decision. You may then ignore the word, replace it with
- one of the suggested words, type-in a replacement, or tell the
- program to learn the word.
-
- Most of the time, the program will make suggestions for the
- words it does not recognize. These suggestions are listed in
- the "Suggestions" pick list. To select one of the suggested
- words, click on the word desired -- this will put the word
- in the "Replace with" text box. If the word you are looking
- for is not among the suggested words, click in the "Replace
- with" text box, and type the word there.
-
- The commands available with the spell checker are:
-
- "Ignore" - will ignore this occurence of the word.
- "Ignore all" - will ignore all occurences of the word.
- "Replace" - will replace this occurence of the word with
- the one in the "Replace with" text box.
- "Replace all" - will automatically replace all occurences
- of the word with the one in the "Replace with" box.
- "Learn word" - will cause the program to save the word it
- did not understand in the user dictionary. Once
- the program has learned a word, it will remember it.
- "Done" - will exit the spell checker.
- "Suggestions" - this pick list shows possible replacements
- for the words the program could not understand.
- Selecting a word from this pick list will put
- it in the "Replace with" text box.
- "Replace with" - this box contains the word that will replace
- the problem word. You can type in the replacement word,
- or you can select it from among the suggested words.
-
- At the bottom of the spell checker dialog you will see a
- rectangular area listing the line in the text block that is
- currently being processed.
-
- STYLE SHEETS
- ------------
-
- The Style sheets... command is part of the Edit menu, and it
- lets you define and select type and paragraph specifications
- with one command. The purpose of style sheets is to allow you
- to design consistent documents, while saving time.
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- 67
-
-
-
-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- Style sheets... can also be accessed by clicking on the
- quick-access icon.
-
- These options are available in the Style Sheets dialog:
- New... - this opens the New style sheets dialog box where
- you can define a new style sheet. Up to 15 style sheets can
- be defined for each publication. For more information see
- New/Edit style sheets in this chapter.
- Edit... - this opens the Edit style sheets dialog box where
- you can edit the selected style sheet. For more information see
- New/Edit style sheets in this chapter.
- Delete... - this deletes the currently selected style sheet.
- Import... - this opens the Import style sheet dialog box where
- you can select a publication whose style sheets you want to
- import into the current publication.
-
- Note: The imported style sheets will overwrite the current
- style sheets, so if you want to preserve the current style
- sheets you should save your publication.
-
- How Style Sheets Work
- ---------------------
- Style sheets are simply a short cut to selecting the type and
- paragraph specifications using the Type Specs and Leading
- dialog boxes. For example, you can define a style sheet for
- your headlines, another for your body text, etc. The style
- sheets are saved as part of the publication, to ensure that
- the design of your publication will be consistent.
-
- If you select a style sheet while text is highlighted in a
- text block, the type specifications (font, size, color, bold,
- italic, underlined, and strikethru) will be applied to the
- highlighted text only. Paragraph specifications (line
- justification and line leading) will always be applied to all
- the lines in the highlighted paragraph(s).
-
- If you select a style sheet while text is NOT highlighted in
- a text block, the type specifications (font, size, color,
- bold, italic, underlined, and strikethru) will be applied to
- the next character that will be typed. Paragraph
- specifications (line justification and line leading) will be
- applied to all the lines in the paragraph.
-
- New/Edit style sheets
- ---------------------
- The New style sheets and the Edit style sheets dialog boxes
- appear anytime you press New... and Edit... respectively,

- from the Style sheets dialog box. Choosing these two options
- from the Style sheets dialog box will allow you to define a
- new style sheet or to change an existing one.
-
- Name - this text box contains the name of the style sheet.
- Type specs... - this button will call the Type specs dialog
- box where you can select the type specifications (font, size,
- color, style, case, rotation, position, and fill pattern) for
- the style sheet.
- Leading... - this button will call the Leading dialog box
- where you can select the line leading to be applied to the
- paragraphs that will use the style sheet.
- Justification - this radio button selects how text will be
- justified in the paragraph that will use the style sheet.
-
-
- GRAPHIC SPECS
- -------------
- This lets you select the brightness of a color or gray-scale
- graphic image object. The dialog displays a dial that you can
- move to set the brightness level between -10 (light) to 10
- (dark). Zero (0) is the normal setting, and it is the setting
- that is automatically used when images are first being imported.
-
- If prior to selecting Graphic specs... you have clicked
- on an existing graphic image with the pointer tool, then
- that image will be displayed in the white sample box in the
- dialog. If no image was selected, then the program will
- display "No graphic selected".
-
- NOTE: If you wish to change the brightness of an already
- ~~~~ existing object (even one that you selected with the
- pointer tool prior to choosing Graphic specs...) you
- will have to select Force attributes from the Edit
- menu after having selected the brightness level desired.
-
- NOTE: The brightness specification only affects color or
- ~~~~ gray-scale graphics. It does not affect monochrome
- objects. When first imported, graphics are always given
- a brightness of 0, regardless of the prior selection in
- the Graphic specs dialog. To change the graphic's
- brightness use Force attributes as explained above.

- =============
-
- In this section we will talk about the Page menu. This menu
- contains commands that have to do with pages in general, such
- as: the way pages are displayed on the screen, getting to a
- particular page directly, inserting or deleting pages, access
- to the master pages, and page definition and customization.
-
-
- Magnification Levels
- --------------------
-
- EnVision Publisher offers four page magnification levels and
- all are fully editable. This means that text and graphics can
- be manipulated at all magnifications.
-
-
- GO TO Command
- -------------
-
- The "Go to... command" is part of the Page menu, and it
- allows you to go directly to the page that you specify.
-
- This command is especially useful when working with long
- publications.
-
-
- INSERT Command
- --------------
-
- The Insert... command is part of the Page menu, and it allows
- you to insert pages into your publication. The new page(s)
- will be blank unless there are items in the Master Pages, in
- which case those items will automatically be shown on the new
- pages, or if the "Auto Columns" radio button in "Setup Page"
- is set to "All". For additional information on the Insert
- command read the section entitled: "Insert" in chapter 8 of
- the EnVision Publisher User's Guide.
-
-

- a range of pages in your publication.
- If you have any items on the page to be deleted, that you do
- not want to delete, we suggest that you copy the items and
- paste them to another page or publication. Once you delete a
- page, all the items on that page will also be deleted.
-
-
- SETUP Command
- -------------
-
- The Setup... command is part of the Page menu, and it allows
- you to define several page options such as: margin size, page
- orientation, auto columns, number of columns, and gutter
- (space between columns). Choosing this command will open the
- Setup page dialog box.
-
- Page Size
- ---------
- There are eight available page sizes: Letter, Legal, Tabloid,
- A4, A3, A5, B5, and Custom. When you select Custom, you may
- type in the page size in the width and height text boxes
- (maximum width and height is 30 inches, or 76.20 cm or 180.67
- picas). Before you choose a page size, make sure that it is
- supported by your printer, otherwise it may not print out.
-
- Margins
- -------
- You must specify the size desired for the four page margins,
- otherwise the program will use the default of 0.5 inch (1.27
- cm, 3.01 picas). The measurement units used in the
- calculation of the margins are taken from the Measurement
- dialog box which is part of the Options menu.
-
- Orientation
- -----------
- Click Portrait to define the pages as vertical (tall). Click
- Landscape to define the pages as horizontal (wide).
-
- Text Block Columns
- -------------------
- The Auto column radio button determines whether or not
- default text block(s) will be created automatically everytime
- a new publication is begun. Once you choose the number of
- columns that you would like in your publication it affects
- the publication as a whole. You may however have a varied
- number of columns on different pages of your publication

- --------------------------------------------------------------
- Column Options
- ---------------
- FIRST - text block column(s) will only be created
- automatically for page 1 in the publication. If you insert
- any additional pages in your publication, they will NOT have
- any text blocks automatically created on them. If you want to
- have additional columns on other pages than page one, they
- will have to be created manually with the I-Beam.
-
- ALL - text block column(s) will be created automatically for
- all pages in your publication. This means that when you
- insert pages with the Insert command all the inserted pages
- will have as many columns as were chosen in the last "Setup"
- dialog box. If you plan to work on a multi-page publication
- with a varied number of columns, we recommend that you choose
- the All radio button selection.
-
- For more information on how to have a varied number of
- columns in your publication read the section: How to add
- columns on a new page, in chapter 8, of the EnVision
- Publisher User's Guide.
-
- NONE - text block column(s) will never be created
- automatically. If you wish to insert text on your pages, you
- will have to create the text blocks manually with the I-Beam.
-
- GUTTER - Here you enter the distance between columns. This
- must be entered in the appropriate measurement units (inches,
- centimeters, or picas) as specified in the Measurements
- dialog box.
-
- Left Master and Right Master
- ----------------------------
-
- These commands are only accessible from the Page menu, and
- they each take you to either the Left or the Right Master
- pages. This is the only way to access the master pages.
-
- Master pages are useful when you have a publication that
- contains more than one page, and it has items that repeat on
- all the pages. For example, if you have an object on the Left
- Master page, that object will be visible on all left-sided
- pages. Similarly, with the Right Master page. However, even
- though the master page objects are visible on all the pages,
- these objects can only be edited while in the respective
- master page. Master pages are a powerful feature that can
- help you create consistent publications easily.

- How to Insert Page Numbers
- --------------------------
-
- Entering ~####,####~ in a text block on one of the master
- pages will cause the program to automatically insert page
- numbers in a document. The first #### sequence is a numeric
- entry specifying the start number, while the second ####.
- sequence specifies the document page where to first start
- inserting page numbers. These entries can be up to 4 digits
- long, and must not exceed 8790. Note that the ~ characters
- (tilde character) are enclosing the page number command.
-
- Note: If you want the page numbers to appear on all pages in
- your publication, you must include a page number
- command on BOTH, the left and the right master pages.

- THE TEXT MENU
- =============
-
- In this section we will discuss all the commands found in the
- Text menu.
-
- The Text menu contains commands that alter text, change the
- spacing between lines of text and characters, as well as
- justify lines of text in a text block.
-
-
- TYPE SPECS COMMAND
- ------------------
-
- The Type specs... command is part of the Text menu and it
- opens the Type specs dialog box. This is where you select a
- font from the pick list of available fonts, its style, size,
- color, case, rotation, position (normal, subscript,
- superscript), optional fill pattern, as well as set your
- tabs. You may also open the Type specs dialog box by clicking
- on the Type specs quick-access icon. If a text range is
- highlighted, the changes you make in Type specs will affect
- the highlighted characters. If no text is highlighted, then
- the next characters you enter at cursor location will have
- the attributes selected in Type specs.
-
- Here are the options that are available in the Type specs...
- dialog box and their functions:
-
- Font
- ----
- This pick list shows all the currently available type faces
- (for example: Helvetique, Times Modern, etc.) The number of
- available fonts depends on your version of EnVision
- Publisher, and if you purchased any additional fonts
- separately. The Sample Box which is located next to the Color
- section, and above the Tab width entry box, displays a sample
- of the font selected from the font section of the Type Specs
- dialog box.
-
- Size
- ----
- Once you choose your font from the Font pick list, the Size
- pick list displays the available sizes for your particular
- font. The sizes that are displayed in the size pick list are
- all displayed in points. To give you an idea of the size of
- a point, consider that one inch is equivalent to 72.27
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- 74
-
-
-
-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- points, and one centimeter is 28.35 points. Because EnVision
- Publisher uses scalable Bezier fonts, fonts are available in
- sizes from 4 to 144 points, in one point increments. For
- rotated text you can only use font sizes up to 72 points.
-
- Color
- -----
- EnVision Publisher also lets you select a color for your
- font. This option will not affect your final printout unless
- you print on a printer that supports color or gray-scale.
- Here is a list of the available colors and their Postscript
- Gray Scale equivalents:
- Black - 100%
- Light Gray - 30%
- Blue - 90%
- Light Blue - 25%
- Green - 80%
- Light Green - 20%
- Cyan - 75%
- Light Cyan - 15%
- Red - 70%
- Light Red - 10%
- Magenta - 60%
- Light Magenta - 5%
- Brown - 50%
- Yellow - 2.5%
- Dark Gray - 40%
- White - 0%
-
- Style
- -----
- The style section of the Type specs dialog box gives you a
- choice of four styles to enhance your text. These styles are:
- Bold, Italic, Underline, or Strikethru. Next to each one of
- these four choices are check boxes. Everytime you select a
- style, a checkmark will appear in that particular check box.
- You have the ability to choose any combination of styles,
- even up to four styles at one time. In other words you can
- choose to have your text display as "bold-italic-underline
- and strikethru", all at the same time.
-
- Case
- ----
- The Case section of the Type Specs dialog box lets you change
- the case of a range of highlighted text.
- Mixed -- This choice is the default, and it has no effect on
- the highlighted text.
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- 75
-
-
-
-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- Caps -- This choice changes all the highlighted text to
- uppercase,
- Lower -- This choice changes all the highlighted text to
- lowercase,
- Swap -- This choice changes all the highlighted uppercase
- text to lowercase, and all the highlighted lowercase to
- uppercase.
-
- Tab
- ---
- This text box specifies the tab width in the currently set
- measurement units: (inches, centimeters, or picas). Once you
- type in the tabs desired, click OK to accept your new
- settings, or click on the Cancel button to leave unchanged.
- All the tabs in the same text block must have the same width.
-
- Note: If you invoked "Type specs" while some text was
- highlighted on the page, only the options you have changed in
- the "Type specs" dialog box will affect the highlighted text.
-
- Rotate
- ------
- This option allows you to rotate text clockwise in 90 degree
- increments (0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees). When the Rotate
- option is set to 0, text will not be rotated (this is the
- default.)
-
- For detailed information on how to rotate text read the
- Rotate section in chapter 9 of the EnVision Publisher User's
- Guide.
-
- Position
- --------
- This option allows you to choose between normal text (which
- is the default), superscript, or subscript. You may have
- superscript or subscript in any font that you have available
- in the Font pick list.
-
- Use Fill Pattern
- ----------------
- This unique option allows you to fill text with the fill
- patterns that are available in the Fill specs dialog box,
- with the exception of the "empty" and "solid pattern",
- (because you can get these two from the Color pick list in
- the Type specs dialog box), by choosing "White" and "Black",
- respectively. Your text will be filled with the pattern that
- was chosen prior to opening the Type specs dialog.
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- 76
-
-
-
-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
-
- You may also change the fill pattern of your text (after
- choosing the use fill pattern option from the Type specs
- dialog) by highlighting your text first, and then opening the
- Fill specs dialog box and choosing a new fill.
-
- Note: When you use a fill pattern for your text the
- characters will not have any outline.
-
- For additional information on the "Type specs" command,
- please see Chapter 9 in the User's Guide.
-
-
- LEADING
- -------
-
- The Leading... command is part of the Text menu and it opens
- the Leading dialog box. Here you may change the spacing
- between lines of text inside a text block.
-
- Leading is expressed as a percentage of the height of the
- tallest character on the line. The available leading values
- are between 100% and 255%. This means that you may increase
- the leading up to a little more than two and a half times the
- original size of the line height, but you may not decrease it
- below the height of the tallest character. If you change the
- leading it will affect the current line in the text block,
- the highlighted lines (if any), and any lines entered
- afterwards.
-
- Note: The leading of the first line in a text block can't be
- changed. You can achieve similar results by moving the text
- block down.
-
- For additional information on using the Leading command, read
- the Leading section in chapter 9 of the EnVision Publisher
- User's Guide.
-
-
- KERNING
- -------
-
- The Kerning... command is part of the Text menu. This command
- opens the Kerning dialog box where you can change the inter-
- character spacing of a range of highlighted characters. While
- leading affects the line spacing, kerning affects the
- character spacing.
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- 77
-
-
-
-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Note: The Kerning command will not show as available in the
- Text menu unless the character(s) to be kerned are
- highlighted first.
-
- Kerning is expressed as a percentage of the character's
- width. The allowable kerning values can range between 1% and
- 255% thus giving you great flexibility. 100% is the default
- value, and it does not affect the spacing. Kerning values
- below 100% will reduce the spacing between characters, thus
- causing characters to appear closer together. Kerning values
- greater than 100% will increase the spacing, thus causing the
- characters to appear further apart.
-
- The new kerning value that you enter will only affect the
- highlighted characters. Any characters entered right behind
- the kerned character will not be affected by the kerning
- value - you will have to highlight them and reinvoke the
- Kerning dialog box.
-
- EnVision Publisher allows you to kern not only spacing
- between two characters but between entire words, sentences,
- paragraphs, and even entire text blocks.
-
- Note: EnVision Publisher always kerns to the right side of
- each character.
-
-
- The BOLD, ITALIC, UNDERLINE, AND STRIKETHRU commands
- ----------------------------------------------------
-
- Remember to highlight your text prior to choosing the Bold,
- Italic, Underline, and srikethru commands. See the Type Specs
- section for detailed descriptions.
-
-
- CENTER, LEFT JUSTIFY, RIGHT JUSTIFY, AND FULL JUSTIFY
- -----------------------------------------------------
-
- These commands are accessible from the Text main menu, as
- well as through control key combinations. The available
- control keys are:
- Control-C to center
- Control-L to left justify
- Control-R to right justify
- Control-F to full justify
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- 78
-
-
-
-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- The control keys are available only while in Text edit mode.
-
- You may use the Center, Left Justify, Right Justify, and the
- Full Justify commands to change the way text margins justify
- (align) within a text block, paragraph, or a line of text.

- THE OPTIONS MENU
- ================
-
- In this section we will discuss all the commands found in the
- Options menu. The Options menu contains commands that allow
- you to customize certain program options such as: whether you
- want to see frames around every object on the screen, setting
- the sound and warning beep, program colors, mouse movement,
- text cursor blink rate, measurements and rulers.
-
- OBJECT FRAME
- ------------
-
- The object frame is the dotted line border that is placed
- around every object that is on the page. The object frame is
- for screen display only - it will NOT print. It delimits the
- page area covered by an object so you can select it with the
- Pointer tool. Sometimes you may want to remove the frame to
- get a better idea of the way your entire page looks. The Object
- frame command can be either enabled or disabled. When the
- checkmark is shown, the object frames are enabled.
-
- HIDE PICTURES
- -------------
-
- When this option is checked, the PCX images that are part of
- your publication will not show on the screen, however their
- frame will show (if "Object frame" is checked). This feature
- is useful in the fact that it speeds up screen redraw of
- documents with lots of PCX images on the page. This only works
- with the screen; it does not affect printing.
-
- RULERS
- ------
-
- When this option is checked, the page rulers are displayed on
- the screen. When it is not checked the rulers are not shown.
- Sometimes you may want to disable the rulers to see more of
- the page on the screen.
-
- MOUSE TRACKERS
- --------------
-
- This command enables/disables the mouse tracking. The mouse
- trackers are the two lines inside the rulers that show the
- position of the mouse cursor on the page. The mouse trackers
- are useful when drawing objects of a specific size.

- MEASUREMENTS
- ------------
-
- The Measurements... command opens the Measurements dialog
- box. The units of measure that are chosen from this dialog
- box will be reflected by the vertical and horizontal rulers
- in your publication. These units of measure will also apply
- across the entire EnVision Publisher program wherever
- measurement units are used, such as in the Page setup and the
- Type specs dialog boxes.
- The following options are available in the Measurements
- dialog box:
-
- Units
- -----
- This option lists the available units of measure. Click on
- one of the radio buttons to choose from one of these units of
- measure: Inches, Centimeters, or Picas.
-
- Subdivisions
- ------------
- This option specifies the number of subdivisions that will be
- displayed by the vertical and horizontal rulers when the page
- magnification is set to 100%. Also, the number of
- subdivisions is automatically increased when your publication
- page is set to magnification levels larger than 100%, and
- decreased at magnification levels less than 100% (View all).
- You may keep the default number of subdivisions or you may
- choose to type in your own number of subdivisions.
-
- Unless you are using EnVision Publisher on a monitor with a
- high resolution, we recommend that you do not use subdivision
- numbers larger than 32, as the subdivision lines will tend to
- overlap.
-
- Note: The object frames, rulers, mouse trackers, and
- measurements are also saved as part of the publication, and
- they will supersede the EnVision Publisher settings when the
- publication is opened.
-
-
- CURSOR AND MOUSE Dialog Box
- ---------------------------
-
- The Cursor and mouse... command is part of the Options menu,
- and it allows you to change the vertical and horizontal speed
- of the mouse, as well as the blink rate of the text cursor.

-
- Swap buttons
- ------------
- If the Swap buttons check-box is checked, the left/right
- mouse buttons will be swapped. This is a handy feature for
- left-handed users.
-
-
- DISPLAY COLORS
- --------------
-
- The Display colors command is part of the Options menu, and
- it allows you to change EnVision Publisher's display colors.
- You can choose between three preset color schemes or create
- your own. The available pre-set color schemes are:
-
- B & W - black and white colors only, ideal for monochrome
- displays. The program automatically selects this if your
- display is monochrome.
-
- Metal - This color scheme is mostly gray with some black and
- white, as well as a touch of light cyan, light blue, and red.
- This offers a 3-D look, and it is easy on the eye.
-
- Rainbow - This color scheme is a mixture of various colors.
-
- Custom - This is a user defined color scheme. By default,
- this is the same as Metal, but you can customize it to your
- liking. The Custom colors are automatically saved to disk.
-
- These colors are available (some colors may not be available
- on some monitors):
-
- Black Light Gray
- Blue Light Blue
- Green Light Green
- Cyan Light Cyan
- Red Light Red
- Magenta Light Magenta
- Brown Yellow
- Dark Gray White
-
- The "Object" pick selects the GUI (Graphical User Interface)
- element whose color you wish to change. There are over 100
- objects listed in this pick, each one of whom can have its
- own color.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- 82
-
-
-
-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- The "Color" pick selects the color (16 colors are available
- for an object). Note: Not all monitors can display all 16
- colors.
-
- The "Scheme" radio button lets you select one of the three
- pre-defined color schemes (Black & White, Metal, Rainbow), or
- your own user-defined (Custom) scheme.
-
- The right half of the Display Colors dialog box shows a
- miniature sample of the screen showing all the objects. You
- will see your changes reflected in this window.
-
- Click on the OK button to activate your changes, or Cancel to
- exit and revert to the previous colors. Any changes you make
- to the Custom color scheme will be saved to disk and will be
- used automatically next time you start EnVision Publisher.
-
- Note: Any changes you make to Black and White, Metal, and
- Rainbow will NOT be saved. Custom is the ONLY one that may be
- customized.
-
-
- SOUND
- -----
-
- The Sound... command is part of the Options menu and it
- opens the Sound dialog box. This dialog box allows you to
- change the way the program handles sound.
-
- Click on the arrow buttons of the respective scroll bar to
- change the Sound Pitch and Duration. Click on the "Test"
- button to hear a sample of your sound settings.
-
- The "Warning beep" check box enables/disables the warning
- beeps that the program makes when an error occurs, or when an
- action cannot be carried out by the program.
-
- The "Acknowledge blip" check box enables/disables the blips
- the program makes when you click on buttons, arrows, etc.
-
- Click on the OK button to activate your changes, or Cancel to
- exit and revert to the previous state. Any changes made will
- be saved to disk and will be used automatically the next time
- you start the program.

- COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS
- =======================
-
- Generally, you start EnVision Publisher by typing EVP at the
- DOS prompt. However, there may be times when you will want to
- control the way the program will run. You do this by means of
- command line parameters. These are words separated by spaces
- that you enter after "EVP" when you start the program. For
- example: EVP NOEMS NOXMS will instruct EnVision Publisher
- not to use EMS or XMS memory. Below is a listing of these
- command line parameters. You can use as many as you need to.
- (If you are using EnVision Publisher in a non-English speaking
- country, or in the United Kingdom, please also see the section
- "Country-specific Command Line Parameters.")
-
-
- HERC - Run EnVision Publisher in Hercules monochrome mode.
- This parameter is necessary if you have a Hercules
- display card because EnVision Publisher cannot detect
- the Hercules card.
-
- VGA - Force EnVision Publisher to run in VGA mode. Please note
- that the program will detect the VGA card, so this
- parameter is almost never necessary.
- EGA - Force EnVision Publisher to run in EGA mode. Please note
- that the program will detect the EGA card, so this
- parameter is almost never necessary.
-
- CGA - Force EnVision Publisher to run in CGA mode. Please note
- that the program will detect the CGA card, so this
- parameter is almost never necessary.
-
- ATT - Force EnVision Publisher to run in ATT 640x400 mode.
- Your graphics card must support this mode.
-
- HERCMOUSE - Prevents EnVision Publisher from re-routing a
- mouse driver memory address when a Hercules display is
- used. The re-routing is usually necessary, in order for
- the mouse to work with a Hercules monitor, so this
- parameter is almost never necessary.
-
- VGAPLUS - Force EnVision Publisher to use the alternate VGA
- driver, rather than the default one.
-
- EGAPLUS - Force EnVision Publisher to use the alternate EGA
- driver, rather than the default one.

-
-
- EnVision Publisher -- Reference Guide (shareware version)
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- SAFEVIDEO - With VGA and EGA cards, EnVision Publisher will
- normally employ direct-video techniques in order to
- improve performance. However, very rarely, some older
- cards may have problems with this. This parameter will
- disable the high speed accessing.
-
- LD=D - This parameter forces EnVision Publisher to show all
- drives from A: to the drive letter denoted by the letter
- "D" after the equal sign. These drives are shown in the
- "Open", "Save as", "Import", and "Export" dialogs.
- EnVision Publisher will normally detect all drives
- present in the system, however, under rare occasions, on
- some older computers and/or networks, EnVision Publisher
- may not recognize all drives. Example: LD=F will force
- EnVision Publisher to list all drives from A: to (and
- including) F:.
-
- NOHELP - This parameter will turn off EnVision Publisher's
- help system, and thus provide about 8k of extra memory.
- However, help will not be available with this parameter.
-
- NOEMS - This instructs EnVision Publisher not to use EMS
- memory. EnVision Publisher will use all known techniques
- to determine if another program is using a particular
- portion of EMS. However, there are some programs that do
- not use EMS properly. In such a case, EnVision Publisher
- may not be able to detect those programs' use of EMS,
- which can cause problems. If you are experiencing
- conflicts with other programs, try this parameter.
-
- NOXMS - This instructs EnVision Publisher not to use XMS
- memory. EnVision Publisher will use all known techniques
- to determine if another program is using a particular
- portion of XMS. However, there are some programs that do
- not use XMS properly. In such a case, EnVision Publisher
- may not be able to detect those programs' use of XMS,
- which can cause problems. If you are experiencing
- conflicts with other programs, try this parameter.
-
- NOMOUSE - This parameter instructs EnVision Publisher to
- ignore the mouse, if one is present. EnVision Publisher
- will autodetect the presence of a mouse, however, if you
- do not want EnVision Publisher to use the mouse, use
- this parameter.
-
- NOSAVER - This disables EnVision's built-in screen saver.

- Country-specific command line parameters
- ========================================
-
- If you are using EnVision Publisher in a non-English speaking
- country or in the United Kingdom, you may choose to start
- EnVision Publisher with a country-specific parameter. This
- will remap certain characters on you keyboard to the extended
- characters. The ASCII codes of the characters that are
- remapped are these: 35 (#), 36 ($), 64 (@), 91 ([), 92 (\), 93
- (]), 94 (^), 96 (`), 123 ({), 124 (|), 125 (}), and 126 (~).
- The number of characters that will be remapped depends on the
- country parameter that you specify. For example, if you
- specify UK, only ASCII 35 will be remapped, however, if you
- specify SWEDEN, all characters except 35 will be remapped.
-
- IMPORTANT: If your computer has another way of remapping these
- --------- characters (e.g., through a keyboard driver), you
- may not need to start EnVision Publisher with a
- country-specific command line parameter.
-
- These are the country-specific command line parameters
- supported by EnVision Publisher:
- UK (United Kingdom)
- GERMANY (Germany)
- FRANCE (France)
- DENMARK (Denmark)
- SWEDEN (Sweden)
- ITALY (Italy)
- SPAIN (Spain)
- JAPAN (Japan)
- NORWAY (Norway)
- 2-DENMARK (alternate Denmark)
- 2-SPAIN (alternate Spain)
- LAT-AMER (Latin America)
-
- To run EnVision publisher with a country-specific command line
- parameter, you simply specify the name of the country desired
- after EVP. For example, to run the program in German mode, at
- the DOS prompt, you enter EVP GERMANY.
-
- No parameter is necessary to run EnVision Publisher in
- American-English mode or in Australian-English mode.
-
- EnVision Publisher supports Code Page 850 as listed in the DOS
- manual, so you can also enter extended characters by typing in
- their ASCII code with the <Alt><num-keypad> (see section
- "Extended and Foreign Characters Support" on the next page).

-
- Extended and Foreign Characters Support
- =======================================
-
-
- EnVision Publisher supports the Multilingual (Latin I) Code
- Page 850, as specified in the DOS manual. This way you can
- easily enter extended characters by simply typing in their
- ASCII code number. This is done by pressing the Alt key, and
- typing the ASCII number on the numeric keypad at the same
- time.
-
- For example, to produce the Sterling (pound) sign character,
- you would press the Alt key and type 156 on the numeric keypad
- at the same time.
-
- When you register to receive EnVision Publisher Plus or
- EnVision Publisher Pro, you will also be provided with a
- comprehensive chart containing tables listing the extended
- characters, as well as an illustrated listing of the country-
- specific command line parameters listed in the previous
- section.

- CLEANUP UTILITY
- ===============
-
- The CLEANUP.EXE utility provided with EnVision Publisher will
- delete any EnVision Publisher temporary files in the
- subdirectory TEMP. Normally, these temporary files are
- deleted by EnVision Publisher when you exit the program.
- However, if you reboot your computer or turn it off while
- EnVision Publisher is running, temporary files may be left on
- your hard disk. You should periodically run CLEANUP to delete
- any such temporary files, and thus free some space on your
- hard disk.
-
- WARNING: Do not run CLEANUP while EnVision Publisher is
- running. If EnVision Publisher was installed on a network,
- make sure that EnVision Publisher is NOT running on any
- terminal when you run CLEANUP. You should run CLEANUP only
- from the directory where EnVision Publisher was installed
- (usually, the EVP directory).

- Network Usage
- =============
-
- First, if you plan on using EnVision Publisher in a network
- environment, you must purchase a separate license for each
- node where the program will be used (discounts are available).
-
- EnVision Publisher will operate safely on a network, as long
- as you observe the following guidelines:
-
- 1. If EnVision Publisher will be used on more than one node
- at the same time, the program should be started from a
- local drive. This means that you should install EnVision
- Publisher on the terminal's local hard disk, not on the
- server. This is necessary because the program creates
- temporary files. It is much safer if these temporary
- files are created on the local drive rather than on the
- server.
-
- 2. You can keep all the publication files on the server, and
- have them loaded from each node running EnVision
- Publisher. You can keep publications on the local drive
- as well, but it is more efficient (from a disk space
- usage point of view) if you kept them on the server.
-
- 3. When you run the CLEANUP.EXE utility provided with
- EnVision Publisher, and you are not observing point 1
- above, make sure that EnVision Publisher is not running
- on any terminal.

- Printing Hints and Facts
- ========================
-
- High Resolution Full Page on LaserJet
- -------------------------------------
- To print a full page at high resolution (300 DPI) on a
- LaserJet printer (except the LaserJet 4), your printer must
- have at least 1 Meg of memory (this is printer memory, not
- computer memory). (On the LaserJet III family of printers you
- need at least 1.5 Meg.) This is necessary because the printer
- needs that much memory to rasterize a full page -- this is a
- printer requirement, not EnVision Publisher. If your printer
- has less than 1 Meg (possibly 512k), you can either print up
- to one half page in high resolution, or full page at 150 or 75
- DPI. The LaserJet 4 uses a different page rasterization
- technique, so this does not apply.
- Generally, most newer LaserJet and compatible printers have 1
- Meg or more of memory, but some older models came standard
- with 512k and can be upgraded to 1.5, 2.0, or 2.5 Meg. or
- more. If your printer has less than 1 Meg, we recommend that
- you upgrade its memory to 1 Meg or more. This will improve the
- use of your printer not only with EnVision Publisher, but also
- with other graphical programs.
-
- Printing Speedup
- ----------------
- If you are using a LaserJet, a dot-matrix, or an inkjet
- printer, and your computer has memory beyond 640k (most 286,
- 386, and 486 computers do), we recommend that you configure
- some of this memory as EMS (generally between 256k and 1 Meg).
- In order to do so you will have to use a memory manager such
- as EMM386.EXE that comes with DOS 5, or one of the third party
- memory manager (386-MAX, etc.). See your DOS manual for
- details on how to do this. (Note that this does not affect
- print speed on PostScript printers).
-
- Color and Gray-scale PCX images
- -------------------------------
- Monochrome PCX images are transparent. This means that the
- white area of a PCX image will allow objects below the PCX
- image to show through. This is not the case with color or
- gray-scale images, where white areas are opaque. If you want
- to prevent the white in theimage from obscuring objects below
- it, send the image to bottom. (See the "To bottom" command in
- this manual or the User's Guide for more details.)

- --------------------------------------------------------------
- Dot-matrix printer printing
- ---------------------------
- EnVision Publisher supports a variety of dot-matrix printer
- standards. Some of these standards are very close, and some
- printers support more than one standard (i.e., Epson LQ, Epson
- FX, Proprinter, etc.). It is possible to have your printer
- setup internally for a particular emulation mode, and you tell
- EnVision Publisher that it is setup in another mode. When this
- happens, it is quite often that the printer will print, but
- the printout size would be distorted (page appears either too
- long or too short). This is a sign that the printer is not
- setup in the emulation mode that you think it is. To correct
- this you should either set the printer properly (DIP switches
- or front-panel menu), or tell EnVision Publisher to print in
- the correct mode.
-
- Serial Printers
- ---------------
- EnVision Publisher will work with either a serial, or a
- parallel printer. However, serial printer interfaces have not
- yet been fully standardized. Also, serial cables are often
- wired incorrectly. Your cable should be wired properly, and
- the serial parameters in the "Printer setup" dialog should be
- set to match your printer. Generally, if EnVision Publisher
- does not print on your serial printer, the cause is your
- cable, the I/O card, or the XON/XOFF setting. (We have seen
- many of the "inexpensive" import I/O cards to be designed
- incorrectly).
-
- PostScript Fonts
- ----------------
- EnVision Publisher has its own scalable, hinted, Bezier font
- technology. This enables the program to generate very high
- quality type on any display and printer. However, when
- printing on a PostScript printer, EnVision Publisher will not
- use its fonts, but rather the fonts resident in the PostScript
- printer. This means that your PostScript printer has to have
- the matching fonts either built-in, or downloaded to it. With
- the unregistered version of EnVision Publisher, the only font
- that matches the PostScript fonts is Helvetique, which
- corresponds to PostScript's Helvetica. The registered versions
- of EnVision Publisher supports other standard PostScript
- fonts.

- Agreement
- =========
-
- EnVision Publisher is a "shareware program" and is provided at
- no charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it
- with your friends and associates, but do not give it away
- altered or as part of another system.
-
- The essence of try-before-you-buy software is to provide
- personal computer users with quality software without high
- prices, and yet to provide incentive for software developers
- to continue to develop new products. If you find this program
- useful and find that you are using EnVision Publisher and
- continue to use EnVision Publisher after a trial period of 30
- days, you must make a registration payment of $69 to Software
- Vision Corporation. The $69 registration fee will license one
- copy for use on one computer, and will entitle you to many
- benefits as described in the "Registration Benefits" section
- in this manual.
- Commercial and governmental users of EnVision Publisher must
- register and pay for their copies of EnVision Publisher within
- 30 days of first use, otherwise their license is automatically
- withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by
- contacting Software Vision Corporation.

- Anyone intending to distribute EnVision Publisher, please see
- the section "Shareware Marketing and Distribution Agreement"

- SHAREWARE MARKETING AND DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT
- ----------------------------------------------
-
- Software Vision Corporation is the sole copyright holder of
- EnVision Publisher, and it reserves all rights to the program.
- However, the shareware version of EnVision Publisher may be
- distributed, as long as the following restrictions are observed:
-
- 1. EnVision Publisher must be distributed in its entirety
- and without any modifications.
- 2. Anybody distributing EnVision Publisher must disclose the
- following points in their literature or on the package:
- a. The cost paid for the evaluation shareware disks
- is to cover the disk vendor's distribution and
- marketing costs, and does not cover the cost of
- the software.
- b. Additional payment to the software publisher
- (author) is required if the user continues to use
- a shareware program beyond the evaluation period.
- 3. Any entity (disk vendors, rack vendors, BBS's, etc.)
- already distributing older versions of EnVision Publisher
- must replace the old version in their library with the new
- version (whether acquired directly from Software Vision,
- or through a different channel) within 30 days of
- receipt/acquisition of the new version. If the program
- version you have is older than 2 years (see "About" in
- the Help menu, for copyright year), please contact us to
- obtain the current version.
-
- These restrictions apply to anyone who wishes to distribute
- EnVision Publisher, including commercial disk vendors, rack
- vendors, BBS operators, user groups, or individuals. Clause
-
- This agreement covers this and all prior versions of EnVision
- Publisher. This agreement supersedes all prior "Shareware

- --------------------------------------------------------------
- Definition of Shareware
- =======================
-
- Shareware is a software promotion method which gives users the
- chance to try a shareware version of the software before
- buying it. If you try EnVision Publisher and continue using it
- after the 30 day trial period, you MUST register. With
- registration, you receive a license giving you the right to
- legally continue using the software after the 30 day trial
- period, you receive the latest version of EnVision Publisher
- Plus or EnVision Publisher Pro, together with a complete 350
- page indexed and illustrated printed manual, as well as other
- benefits such as more scalable fonts, clipart, templates, full
- access to our product support staff, a subscription to our
- newsletter, and future software updates at large discounts.
- Please see "Registration Benefits" in this manual for a
- detailed description of what you get when you register.
-
- Copyright laws apply to both shareware and commercial
- software, and Software Vision Corporation retains all rights,
- with this exception: you are granted the right to copy and
- distribute the shareware version of EnVision Publisher to your
- friends and associates. Shareware disk vendors are permitted
- to include EnVision Publisher in their libraries as described
- in the "Marketing and Distribution Agreement" on the prior page.
-
- Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.
- You should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
- whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system
- makes fitting your needs easier, because you can try before
- you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also.
- Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you
- don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
-
- Ombudsman Statement
- ===================
-
- "Software Vision Corporation is a member of the Association of
- Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that
- the shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to
- resolve a shareware-related problem with an ASP member by
- contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help. The
- ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with
- an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for
- members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545
- Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe message
- via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536."
